KICKED IN THE TEETH ON A HELLBENDER

ZEKE

When the Schorem barbers and a bunch of our friends compiled lists of bands we wanted at the baptism of Scumbash in 2013, the name Zeke came up the most. But damn, the Seattle speed kings hadn’t been in Europe for almost a decade and didn’t seem to have plans in that direction anymore. Hell, for ten years in a row Peter Pan Speedrock tried to bring Zeke over for Speedfest, to no avail.

Lo and behold, in 2017 Zeke finally will burn more jet fuel and land in Europe again. Frontman Blind Marky Felchtone gave the band an overhaul and now they’re ready to kick us in the teeth two times. ScumBash has the honor to host Zeke’s first show on the Old Continent in a dozen years. In July our friends of Sjock festival in Belgium will give you another chance to Ride with Zeke.

The Lords of the Highway also returned to the studio to record a new album with super sound conjurer Jack Endino. The title is Hellbender and it’s due for a release early next year on Relapse Records. Get in gear for this, ‘cause Zeke’s bludgeoning punk rock & roll is tantamount to tractor pulling and drag racing. Zeke you Til' The Livin' End!

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS

“Putting the fast in Belfast since 1977.” No mean feat: SLF celebrate their 40th anniversary this year, so it’s the ideal occasion to invite them to ScumBash. Jake Burns might say he’s that “shouty bloke with a guitar at the front of that bunch of old punk rockers, Stiff Little Fingers”, but their new live album Best Served Loud proves once again this is a toughened band with an arsenal of terrific songs.

GARAGE TRASH GALORE

THE MONSTERS

Hey you, don't watch that, watch this! This is the heavy heavy monster sound … Wait, scratch that. This ain’t the nutsiest sound around, it’s the fuzziest sound around. But listen buster, we’re going nuts for it either way. The Monsters are truly one of a kind with their Voodoo Rhythm clone drum set and the inimitable Reverend Beat-Man at the helm. Primitive raw riff garage trash by the überband from the underbelly of Switzerland.

LEGION OF THE DAMNED

The southern coal reserve Limburg is the Dutch equivalent of Limbo. Down there at hell's edge these defenders of the damned rose from the ashes of cult-metallers Occult. They brought the Netherlands and the rest of the underworld blast after blast of metal thrashing mayhem. Now say it with Satanic spirit: My name is Legion, for we are many ...

Turn up the coffin bass

Nekromantix

Danmark spawned one of the biggest names in psycho in the late eighties, when Nekromantix hit the scene. With classic albums, such as Curse Of The Coffin, and a coffin-shaped doghouse bass, the Nekrotrio made their mark.

Nowadays singer/slapper Kim Nekroman resides in the USA, where he brought two loco locals on board to keep the unique Nekrostyle alive. Some say Only The Meteors Are Pure Psychobilly. The Nekro answer is OTNAPN: Only The Nekromantix Are Pure Nekrobilly.

THE POLECATS

Years before the Stray Cats landed in Europe, The Polecats were flying the flag for fired up rockabilly, including nods to glam and punk. The four Londoners started out in ’77 as the Cult Heroes, but quickly changed their name to The Polecats. Nonetheless they are cult heroes to this day, thanks to timeless gems such as Marie Celeste and Rockabilly Guy, the latter being one of the most covered songs in the genre since neo-rockabilly took off. And yes, guitarist-slash-genius Boz Boorer has been Morrissey’s right-hand man since 1991, but please don’t hold that against him. Polecats Are Go!

FROM Gothenburg TO GUTTERDAM

SCUMBAG MILLIONAIRE

Some call ‘em Sons of the ‘Copters, but truth be told, Nicke Andersson & co also propelled sixties garage and seventies punk rock to their time with a bang. On top of that, Scumbag Millionaire have the tunes and attitude to stand out on their own merit, with a near Brant Bjork backbeat to boot. They say: “High energy action punk, straight from the gutters of Gothenburg.” We say: Welcome to Gutterdam!

Mark Foggo’s Skasters

Slow sucks! That’s been Mark Foggo’s maxim since 1980, when his debut album Speeding My Life Away gave the world a rude taste of fast ‘n’ lively feel-good music. Since then there’s no stopping him and his missionairies of ska.

Exemplary was Speedfest in 2007 when they were the closing band. The mighty Dwarves, Mad Sin and Madball had almost leveled the dancehall, but Mark Foggo’s Skasters still managed to get the place shakin’ after midnight. So put on yer skankin’ shoes and you’ll feel Lucky To Be Alive, motherfoggos.

A dozen years or so ago, singer and bass player Ox Accelerator was already being acclaimed as 'the Dutch Matt Freeman' and soon the whole band was hailed all over Europe for their stunning punk rock. In the vein of Ramones and Dwarves, they tend to accelerate even more on stage, while these Rotterdam road dogs pull it off with certified power trio tactics. The video below's an old one, when Accelators were a four-piece, but you get the picture.

cash classics galore

Def Americans

The legacy of Johnny Cash is too huge to grasp, but one thing is certain: his timeless songs will live on forever. Since The Man himself is gone, countless tributes have sprung up, although plenty of ‘em sound as if they got run over by a psychobilly Cadillac.

Fortunately there are musicians who pay hommage in a proper and respectful manner, for instance Def Americans. They absolutely nail the Cash classics one piece at a time, from the boom-chicka-boom to the Rubinized gems.

At ScumBash they will play a Sun Sessions set, featuring the best of Cash on Sun Records and some Cash gems from later years in the same style.
